Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit China during their first bilateral meeting since 2017, as both sides signal a willingness to rebuild diplomatic and trade ties.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday extended an invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit China, marking the first formal engagement between their nations’ leaders since 2017.
“Recently, with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Canada relations have shown a recovery toward a trend of positive development,” Xi told Carney at the APEC summit in South Korea, adding, “China is willing to work with Canada to bring China-Canada relations back to the right track.”
Carney acknowledged the thaw, saying, “In recent years, we have not been as engaged,” and called for “constructive and pragmatic dialogue” to resolve “current issues” and “help build a more sustainable, inclusive international system.”
