Once users reach the 20GB threshold, they will no longer be able to send or receive emails.
Yahoo Mail users worldwide will now have to pay for additional storage as the platform reduces its free tier to 20GB, a significant downgrade for many long-time users. The company announced the change on Tuesday via an email notice, stating that the update takes effect immediately.
Once users reach the 20GB limit, they will no longer be able to send or receive emails unless they upgrade or delete old messages. However, mailbox access will remain, allowing time to manage space or choose a plan.
Yahoo introduced two new plans: 100GB for $1.99/month and 1TB for $9.99/month. Both include ads. A premium “Yahoo Mail Plus” option offers 200GB, no ads, and more tools.
“To help users manage space, new features like real-time tracking and attachment managers are now available,” the company said.
While Gmail offers 15GB shared across services, Yahoo’s 20GB is for emails only—potentially beneficial for some users. Still, the move may frustrate those surprised by the abrupt downgrade.
