The protesters were gathered in front of a Guarantee Trust Bank in the Federal Capital Territory, waving the Nigerian flag and holding placards bearing different descriptions.
Angry youths staged a demonstration at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Abuja on Thursday, demanding justice for social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), who was controversially arrested by the EFCC. The protesters, waving Nigerian flags and holding placards, accused GTBank of complicity in the activist’s detention, alleging he was trapped inside the bank’s exit for five minutes to facilitate his arrest. Activist-lawyer Deji Adeyanju condemned the incident, calling it an “inhumane setup” and vowing legal action against the bank.
VDM’s arrest has sparked widespread outrage, with critics accusing authorities of weaponizing anti-graft agencies to silence dissent. Adeyanju’s legal team, led by Marvin Omorogbe, confirmed the activist is in EFCC custody but did not disclose the charges. “Our lawyers are now with him, and we are working on securing his release,” Adeyanju stated. VDM, known for his fiery critiques of corruption and high-profile figures, has amassed a significant following, making his arrest a flashpoint for free speech concerns.
