Zelensky said Russia’s drone attack on Poland showed the urgent need for a combined Europe-Ukraine air defence system.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday called for a joint air defence system with European allies after accusing Russia of “deliberately targeting” Poland during an overnight drone attack.

Polish authorities confirmed they had downed several Russian drones fired towards Ukraine, with some violating its airspace. The incident drew condemnation from NATO allies, who warned Moscow against further escalation.

“Ukraine has long proposed the creation of a joint air defence system to ensure the guaranteed downing of drones and missiles through combined aviation and air defences,” Zelensky said on social media. He described the violation of Poland’s skies as a “dangerous precedent” and insisted it was “no accident.”

The Ukrainian leader urged partners to respond strongly, warning that Russia was attempting to “humiliate one of Europe’s key countries.”

Russia has fired tens of thousands of drones at Ukraine during the war, intensifying strikes as peace efforts remain stalled.
