Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a rare look inside his private Kremlin flat during a Russian film screening, where he served guests kefir in a modest kitchen. The rest of the residence featured lavish gold-and-white decor, a gym, chapel, chandeliers, and a portrait of Tsar Alexander III.

In the documentary, Putin admitted he “constantly” thinks about who will replace him as president, adding: “The people have a choice.” He warned any successor would have “no chance of doing anything serious” without public trust.

The documentary airs ahead of Putin’s scheduled trip to China in August, reciprocating Xi Jinping’s recent Moscow visit. The two leaders will jointly mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s WWII defeat in Beijing.

Russia’s deepening economic ties with China follow Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. China, officially neutral, continues supplying key components to Moscow.

Mr Putin last visited China in 2024, while Mr Xi has visited Russia thrice since the Ukraine invasion.
