DAURA, KATSINA — As Nigeria prepares to bury former President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, stories from his kinsmen, staff, and neighbours reveal the humble, private life he led in retirement.
Buhari, who died at 82 in a London hospital on Sunday, will be buried at his Daura home in Katsina State, concluding a life marked by service and integrity.
Domestic workers described his affection for animals, from tortoises to exotic birds. “His love and care for pets and other animals will always be remembered,” one staff member told The PUNCH.
Neighbours remembered his simplicity and generosity. Hajiya Bilkisu Isah said, “His simplicity and excellent character will always be remembered in this community.”
Ismaila Ibrahim noted, “He was humble and disciplined till the end… Every Sallah, he distributed food, rams, money, and essentials to the less privileged.”
Close friend Suleiman Ammali reflected, “My heart aches, but I take comfort knowing God has His plan. Nigerians, especially in the north, will truly miss a good father and leader.”
Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan praised Buhari’s integrity: “His 2015 election was based on his exemplary record in public service and integrity.”
President Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning and approved a public holiday for Tuesday. An inter-ministerial committee has been tasked with planning the state funeral.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said in a statement.
