Prince Harry made an unexpected visit to Kyiv to show support for wounded Ukrainian service members, launching aid through his foundation as London moves forward with new sanctions against Russia.
Britain’s Prince Harry made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Friday in support of wounded service members, his representatives confirmed. He arrived in Kyiv, though they declined to disclose his schedule citing security concerns.
This is his second trip to the country since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022; he previously visited the western city of Lviv in April. While traveling on an overnight train to Kyiv he told the Guardian, “We cannot stop the war but what we can do is do everything we can to help the recovery process.”
Prince Harry, a British Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, is founder of the Invictus Games—a Paralympic-style event designed to inspire military veterans in overcoming battlefield injuries. Ukraine is bidding to host the Games in 2029. Meanwhile, his Archewell Foundation announced this week a donation of $500,000 to aid injured children from Gaza and Ukraine, earmarked for medical evacuations and prosthetics development.
His visit coincides with a trip by Britain’s Foreign Secretary, who unveiled new sanctions against Russia’s oil revenues and military supplies in a display of U.K. solidarity with Ukrainians facing intensified attacks.
