The US president stressed his “personal obligation” to end the war while Starmer called for tougher international pressure on Moscow.
At the close of his state visit to the United Kingdom, President Donald Trump voiced frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring, “He has let me down,” over efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump insisted the conflict could have been avoided under his watch and pledged to continue negotiating with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Starmer said Putin has only shifted under international pressure and called for stronger diplomatic action.
On migration, Trump compared the UK’s Channel crossings to “millions” entering the US and suggested Britain deploy its military. Starmer pointed to a “one in, one out” return scheme with France.
The two leaders also differed over Palestinian statehood, with Trump focusing on the Gaza crisis. He further confirmed US interest in reclaiming Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan and praised NATO’s new 5% defense spending pledge.
Trump also mourned Charlie Kirk’s killing, calling it a “politically motivated assassination.”
