Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, joining a wave of defections that have reduced the opposition’s number of governors to eight.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking another major defection within Nigeria’s opposition ranks. Diri announced his resignation on Wednesday at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.

Vanguard correspondent in Bayelsa reports that the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ngobere, and 18 PDP lawmakers also resigned from the party. Their departure follows that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) just 24 hours earlier.

Governor Diri has not yet disclosed his next political move. His exit further weakens the PDP, which has now lost four governors to the APC this year, leaving the party with only eight governors nationwide.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the development in a statement posted on his verified social media account.

Political observers say Diri’s resignation signals further realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
