Jonathan denies alleging Buhari’s ties to Boko Haram

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says his comments on Boko Haram were misrepresented, stressing that he never accused Muhammadu Buhari of having ties with the insurgent group.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports suggesting he accused the late President Muhammadu Buhari of links with Boko Haram, clarifying that his remarks were taken out of context.

In a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said his comments at the launch of Scars, a book by ex-Chief of Defence Staff Lucky Irabor, were meant to highlight Boko Haram’s deceptive tactics.

“The former President’s comments were grossly misrepresented. At no time did Dr Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram,” Eze stated.

Jonathan explained that insurgents once falsely named Buhari as a negotiator to exploit political divisions, but he never implied complicity.

He added that both he and Buhari fought terrorism during their tenures, urging Nigerians to disregard misinterpretations of his remarks.
