Plastic straws, styrofoam, and thin nylon bags remain prohibited under the July 1 enforcement.
LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has clarified that its ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs), set to take effect on July 1, 2025, will not cover water sachets, PET bottles, or nylon bags thicker than 40 microns.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the clarification Tuesday following public confusion sparked by viral online reports.
“The decision to ban Single Use Plastics in Lagos was an existential one,” Wahab said. “As a coastal state below sea level… plastic waste poses a serious crisis.”
Under the ban, styrofoam packs, disposable cups, plastic straws, cutlery, and thin carrier bags are prohibited.
The move follows an 18-month moratorium since January 2024 and is part of a broader waste management strategy, including a new Plastic Waste Management Fund supported by producers and importers.
“Lagos must take the lead in responsible environmental practices,” Wahab said. “This ban is just one of several bold steps toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos.”
The pure water sachets should be banned. All the gutters are littered with them
