The institution will now be called Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri after former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at age 82. The institution will now be called Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
Speaking during a special Federal Executive Council session on Thursday, Tinubu described Buhari as a “good, decent, and honourable man.” While admitting that “no leader is perfect,” he praised Buhari’s life of discipline, patriotism, and moral integrity.
“He stood always ramrod—unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular,” Tinubu said.
He noted Buhari’s role in the historic 2015 transition of power and described his governance as rooted in “transparency, justice, and quiet courage.”
The session ended with prayers and a moment of silence. Across Nigeria, tributes poured in as Tinubu stated, “The incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten.”
The renaming is seen as a lasting tribute in a region where Buhari led reconstruction efforts amid insurgency.
