Trump speaks with Putin as global tensions rise

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for an hour on Saturday, discussing several global conflicts.

Trump revealed on Truth Social that their conversation focused primarily on the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, sparked by Israel’s “preemptive” strike and Iran’s retaliation. Both leaders agreed the Middle East war should end, with Trump adding, “his war should also end,” in reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Though Ukraine was briefly discussed, Trump noted that those talks would continue next week. He also mentioned that prisoner swaps between Russia and Ukraine were already underway. POLITICO recently reported that Trump had warned Putin against avoiding peace negotiations, saying he was “playing with fire.”

Trump also held a separate conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, addressing trade and geopolitical issues. Putin, during the call, also wished Trump a happy 79th birthday, which the former president described as “very nice.”
